A Hormone Detox can be just the beginning!

It is really important to maintain hormone wellness.  9 Simple Steps will help you continue past your Hormone Detox Program into a hormonally balanced future.

Hormone Detox 1.    Do a saliva test annually.  This test will tell you if you need to tweak your hormone program to keep it on track.  A saliva test is easy to order and is easy to complete.  It is also comforting to know my own hormone levels. Link: HelpForHormones.com

2.    Focus on your nutrition.   We advocate eating 40/30/30 which translates to 40% of your diet as carbs, 30% of your diet as protein and 30% of your diet as good fats. Eating a freshly prepared, whole-foods diet will help avoid estrogen like compounds that are found in food packaging, plastics, food additives, canned foods and drinks, and soy products.

3.    Eat the right amount of Carbohydrates. We are not just talking about Pasta and Breads.  Vegetables and Fruit are carbs too.  A good carb is one that is high in fiber so….. make high fiber choices and only eat 40% of your nutrition from this category. All carbs convert to sugar however and if we do not use them up in our day we will find that we will begin to add on pounds and inches which will negatively affect out hormones in the end.

4.    Eat the Right Protein. The body requires protein for cell regeneration and maintenance and energy.   When broken down into amino acids, proteins become precursors to nucleic acid, co-enzymes, hormones, immune responders and cellular repair agents.  Keeping our protein intake to 30% of our daily intake is very important to hormone health. If selecting animal choices try to choose organic and lean meats and chicken.  Fish too is an excellent protein choice.  Vegetarian sources of proteins include legumes, nuts, seeds and fruits.

5.    Eat the right Fats. The body needs fats for rebuilding cells and hormone production. The bottom Line - Don’t eat fats  such as hydrogenated vegetable oil, peanut oil, canola oil, soybean oil, margarine, shortening or other chemically altered fats. Choose fats like coconut oil, real butter, olive oil (don’t heat!) and animal fats (tallow, lard) from healthy sources instead and eat lots of high Omega-3 fish. Coconut Oil is amazing for hormone health. It provides the necessary building blocks for hormone production, can assist weight loss, reduce inflammation, and even has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

6.    Exercise Appropriately - If you have hormone imbalance, intense extended exercise can actually make the problem worse in the short term because it causes more stress. Sleep is actually more important, at least during the balancing phase, so focus on relaxing exercises like walking or swimming and avoid the extended running, cardio and exercise videos, for now…. And rest.

7.    Treat your adrenals with respect.  Taxing the adrenals will then puts a strain on your bodies need for progesterone and in doing that can throw your hormones out of balance …again!  Stress is the largest contributor to hormone imbalances in both men and women. Rest and a good night’s sleep is the best adrenal support. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, your adrenals will be taxed and your hormones will not be balanced. Period.

8.    Supplement Wisely - In a perfect world, we would be rising and sleeping with the sun, getting Vitamin D from the sun and eating raw and organic food while relaxing and exercising in great balance each day in a stress-free world.  Since I doubt that describes any of us currently, supplements can fill in the gaps.  Having a wisely planned supplement program will support hormonal balance.

9.   Avoid Toxins Toxins found in pesticides, plastics, household chemicals and even mattresses can contain hormone disrupting chemicals that mimic hormones in the body and keep the body from producing real hormones. Things like hormonal birth control can (obviously) do the same thing.Cook in glass or non-coated metal pans (no non-stick or teflon!) and avoid heating or storing foods in plastic. Don’t use chemical pesticides or cleaners.

If you adopt an “I Can Do It !” attitude then hormonal balance will be yours during your hormone detox.
